EVENTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR
05-09-2016 | STUDENTS ATTEND ANNUAL LUNCHEON
Three Del Valle HS students had a rare opportunity to attend the ACC Center for Public Policy and Political Studies Annual Fundraiser Luncheon. This event gave them a chance to network with other students from Austin area schools as well as professionals in various industries, and experience a business setting where social etiquette is the norm.
Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Glenn Hegar, was the keynote speaker for the event. Upon arrival, he introduced himself and shook each attendee's hand. Guests then entered the banquet hall to hear several speeches while enjoying a delicious lunch of grilled chicken salad with seasoned croutons, fresh baked bread, and a slice of cheesecake with coffee.
Mr. Hegar delivered a profound speech, discussing the importance of education, but even more so, how one uses that education for the better good in our country. He stated that many attend college, but do nothing with it to make a difference. He further expressed the need to always be learning, even when not in school, and opened up about how his upbringing on a farm taught him the value of hard and honest work.
Prior to closing, four individuals were presented the Building Tomorrow's Leaders Award for demonstrating leadership through their own successes in Austin. A short bio was included in the program for each recipient.
A special Thank You is extended to Mr. Benny Hawkins, Ms. Falicia Perez, and Ms. Pilar Westbrook for making this a memorable opportunity for our students!

04-23-2016 | UIL PLACES AT REGIONALS
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) competed in spring competitions at Wimberly (02-13), Hays (03-05), and Westlake (04-01 & 04-02) high schools. Competitions included subjects like math, science, debate, journalism, speech, computer science, applications, writing, and spelling.
Students participating excel in specific subjects in which they compete with other schools and are then judged on their performance. Placing in these events can prove difficult when going against the best in the region, however, all are dedicated to the constant improvement of their specialized skill(s) to prepare for the next challenge. One such student moved onto Regionals.
On April 23rd, Estreylla Sierra won 6th place at the Regional competition at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. This put her in the top 24 UIL competitors in 6A Editorial Writing for 2016! Congratulations Estreylla!
The Del Valle UIL team is coordinated by Enrique Velasquez. His goal for the team is to start young, and grow through experience, thus creating a power house of competitors. If anyone is interested in joining the UIL team for the 2016-2017 school year, see Mr. Plumley in room D201, or email Enrique at [email protected].

03-05-2016 | JR. SHPE PARTICIPATES AT FINE ARTS EVENT
Jr. Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers hosted an activity booth during the Fine Arts event at Del Valle High School. Visitors enjoyed an interactive building activity with marshmallows and sticks to create various housing structures while learning about form vesus function, important factors in the design of architecture.
The booth gave SHPE members an opportunity to discuss the club with upcoming high school students and parents. The goal is to increase membership next year by inviting ninth graders to participate and grow with the club throughout high school.
Many opportunities are available to SHPE members, and several students have already benefited from them by attending camps hosted by universities and participating in local workshops.

03-02-2016 | SAMSUNG HOSTS THREE DAY HIGH TECH U
Seven students from Del Valle High were selected to attend this year's SEMI High Tech U at Samsung along with 30 other students from other Austin area high schools. The three day event provided many hands-on activities in which students can explore the various Engineering fields. Team building, problem solving, and communication skills enforced the learning experience, teaching students about having high expectations for themselves and others.
Several disciplines included STEM based learning in digital electronics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, micro processing, and environmental engineering. Students explored a clean room at the UT NACENT facility, created photos using a process called photo lithography, and made a little robot follow instructions.
Through this program, students can gain a better understanding of what is involved in various STEM fields, thus giving them an advantage when choosing a career path.
This is the fourth year that Del Valle has participated in the event, which is organized by Michelle Cotta and Leslie Tugman of the SEMI Foundation. With their efforts, along with Samsung and UT, students can have a unique and rewarding experience that will impact them for years to come. A sincere thank you for everything they do for our students!

03-01-2016 | JR-SHPE TOURS COCKRELL SCHOOL AT UT
Del Valle's Junior Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (Jr. SHPE) spent the day at University of Texas's Cockrell School of Engineering. UT-SHPE members started the day by sharing information about the different schools within the Engineering program, which included a visitor's guide of the university. The students were then given a tour of the facilities, with the last stop at the UT tower.
After the tour, students enjoyed pizza and a Q&A session with the UT members. Topics addressed were campus life, class schedules, transportation, and extracurricular activities. Daisy Vasquez, a 2015 Del Valle graduate, was also in attendance, and explained what her first year at the university was like, offering words of encouragement.
A special thank you is extended to Mirka Mendez and her team for making the day a success for our students and to Del Valle Transportation for getting everyone to and from safely!

02-08-2016 | SHPE MEETING
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or SHPE (pronounced "SHEP"), assists potential upcoming engineers through education, offering a support system like no other. The group is nationwide, and was founded to encourage students from all walks of life to pursue their dreams. Del Valle's Jr. Chapter is led by UT.
UT-SHPE students visit JR-SHPE at Del Valle in room C107 to discuss upcoming events, scholarships, opportunities, and life at UT. These visits give students a chance to learn about what life will be like after high school, and how to achieve their goals. The meetings occur once or twice a month, and anyone can join regardless of their background.
Here, UT and JR SHPE members clown around for a couple of pics. In the background is the Del Valle Jr. SHPE logo, designed by Raul Vides.

10-28-2015 | SOLAR CAR RACE, DEL VALLE WINS AGAIN
Applied Materials once again hosted their annual Solar Car Challenge for high school students in the Austin area. Seven engineering students from DVHS participated in the all day event.
One to three man teams were required to build a car with a small motor that connects to a solar panel. The design of the car had to meet certain criteria, but the appearance and functionality were left to the imagination of the participants. They then competed in a race against other schools to see whose car ran the fastest.
Once again, Del Valle dominated the competition! Antonio Gerena took first place overall, and was undefeated the entire day, while Daniel Armstrong snatched up second place overall. Honorable mentions went to Paige Campos and David Martinez for Innovation, and Brandon Buaphan for Craftsmanship.
A special shout out goes to Engineering teacher, Mr. Vance Davis, who oversaw the operations of the solar car assembly process, and to the Career & Technology director, Mr. Norris Sabastian, who took time out of his busy schedule to spend time with our students!
Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the success of this day! See the final winning race video below.
